Prof. Obiageli Nnodu is Professor of Haematology and Blood Transfusion, Honorary Consultant Haematologist, University of Abuja Teaching Hospital, Gwagwalada. She is Vice Chair of the Nigerian Sickle Cell Support Society Network (SCSSN) which works with the government and professional groups for the control of Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) in Nigeria. She serves on technical committees of the government on non-communicable diseases and has completed a number of national assignments related to SCD. From 2018-2019, she carried out an assessment of the level of implementation of sickle cell disease programs in high burden countries for the WHO AFRO (2018-2019) and advocated for a global funding mechanism to address the problem of SCD in high burden countries. In partnership with Silver Lake Laboratories, she led a successful application for the inclusion of point of care tests for sickle cell disease in the essential diagnostics list of the WHO - EDL3. She is the National Coordinator of the American Society of Hematology Consortium for Newborn Screening for Sickle Cell Disease in Africa (CONSA). Professor Nnodu, is a 1995 Chevening Scholar, an alumnus of Imperial College, London and the Principal Investigator of the Sickle Pan African Research Consortium NigEria (SPARC-NEt). Professor Obiageli Nnodu was recently elected into the Nigerian Academy of Medicine.
